Duke Nukem Forever

Come get some!

As a kid, Duke Nukem 64 was one of my most played games. Duke Match was where it was at! So naturally, I have been wanting a new Duke Nukem game for a while now. There were always the rumors of its release this year…or the next. So naturally, I was a bit skeptical at first when I heard about DNF. I did the pre-order out of sheer hope, and to my amazement, it actually came out. What followed was a mixture of nostalgia and disappointment, and some lulz!

One small feature that I really enjoyed about the game was all the things you could interact with. Basketball hoops, drinking fountains, video poker, and a lot more. I particularly enjoyed the whiteboard at the very start of the game.

As a fan of the original Duke Nukem games, I must say that DNF really brought me back. Yeah, the graphics and game are all new, but I was Duke. I was the man, and I was pissed and kicking the crap out of alien scum! All the little things about the game such as Duke’s voice and the weapons really added to the feel. I really enjoyed that.  I also enjoyed all the little Easter eggs and fun little surprises in the game, as well as all the art. Here is a fitting example: I walked up to a phone at one point in the game, and it gave me the use function. I clicked, and I hear, “*beep* “Tonight… you!” ” I lol’ed pretty hard, and if you are familiar with where it’s from, I’m sure you would have too! Here is some of the cool Duke Nukem paintings I found in the game as well.

I didn’t really care for all the mature content in the game. Duke has always been a ladies man, there is no doubt about it. I didn’t start playing with any false pretenses that he wasn’t.  But the amount of innuendos in the game, along with flat out nudity kinda killed it for me. There are certain games where the nudity really adds to the story, such as in LA Noire. It helped set a somber tone that really conveyed the seriousness of the crime scene.  DNF’s nudity was just blatantly sexual and highly stereotypical. While not everyone has a problem with this in a game, I felt like I would have much rather been destroying something alien. It was just over done. For this reason alone, I would strongly caution parents about this game. It is rated M for a reason! Maybe you should play though it first and then decided if you are going to let you child play it.

All in all, I will play this game through, just to do it and get my money’s worth, but I doubt I will ever play it or the multiplayer again afterwards. This was a nice game for fanboys, though a bit over the top. I guess it’s just hard for a game to do the Duke justice!

“I’ve got balls of fail!”

A nice little joke in the game.

Hey wait a second, this isn’t half life 2!

Duke’s got a pretty nice pad!

  1. I like how the controller blocks the bottom of that last screen. How convenient. :)

I’ve only played the demo, but it seemed fun. This needs to sell well so Gearbox can make Borderlands 2. :P

The Breakdown

  • Graphics Score: 6

I did not like how after things were out of focus or looked just plain blurry. I was playing on my PC with the graphics maxed, but I didn't feel like it. I understand that the blur was supposed to be like where you were focusing, but it didn't feel that way. Also, the characters felt like they had rough edges that could have used a little smoothing.
  • Sound Score: 8

I rated this one the highest for a few reasons. The first is all the Duke quotes. Some of them are just priceless and many others are just timeless! And the variations of the Duke Nukem theme song throughout the game were pretty rad. One thing that I noticed about some of the sounds was how similar they were to Duke Nukem 64. One example is the shotgun; it sounded just like I remembered.
  • Gameplay Score: 7

I was not all that impressed by the feel of the game at all. I liked the hud a lot, and I really enjoyed the way you saw your body in first person when you were thrown around or knocked down, however I did not like the way combat worked. The movement felt jittery, and aiming, even after I really tried to dial it in, never felt like it was able to be as accurate as I would have liked.
  • Single Player Score: 7

All out destruction and mayhem! I loved all the baddies that I got to kill, and the story was ok. Its always fun to take down some ridiculous sized alien with a ton of explosives.
  • Multiplayer Score: 4

I probably wont ever play it again, even though I rocked everyone else. It takes the problems with the mechanics of the game as I mentioned before, and makes them even worse.

  • Overall Score: 6.4
